At Statum Style, we didn’t set out to be a kid’s company by any means. We simply wanted to create all-natural products with the highest quality ingredients we could possibly find for anybody that wanted them! It’s no secret that with the thousands of companies cheaply manufacturing mass produced products to increase profit in any way possible, millions of people are subjecting themselves to over preserved, low quality hair products. On the surface, these products don’t sound that bad. You’re not eating it, right? Right, but your skin and scalp are highly absorbent to toxic chemicals like paragons, phthalates, and formaldehyde. Yes, you might be styling your child’s hair with the same chemical used to preserve the frog you dissected in 8th grade science class. Unfortunately, the cosmetic industry is wildly unregulated leaving many companies to choose profit over health. In the event the frog reference wasn’t enough to convince you to choose all-natural products for you and your child, let’s quickly highlight the three toxins mentioned above:
Parabens: Parabens are a preservative widely used to preserve cosmetics. They have the capability to mimic the hormone estrogen and disrupt the normal function of hormone systems affecting male and female reproductive systems. Studies have also linked some cancers to parabens. While you can certainly find studies that indicate low levels of parabens are safe, the potential concern is enough for many parents to choose an all-natural choice such as Statum Style. And, while your current product may use the buzzword “paraben free” on their packaging, please note many companies are simply adding other harsh and toxic preservatives as alternatives.
Phthalates: Phthalate exposures in humans have been linked to changes in sex hormone levels, altered development of genitals, and low sperm count and quality. We’ll just leave that one there…
Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde is used in your local funeral home to preserve the dead, but should certainly not be in your child’s hair product. Formaldehyde is even more dangerous when heated and inhaled. Given the use of straighteners and blowdryers on hair, it is even more of a concern and reason to choose all natural.
Ok, enough with the health talk and back to hair. The products that contain the chemicals above, as well as many others that don’t, are simply bad for the look of your hair and scalp.
